"YANES WUHL"

YANES WUHL-INTERVIEW

WHERE DOES YOUR WORK START?

I MADE THIS PROJECT FOR MY DIPLOMA AT ECAL. FOR THE STARTING POINT, WE MUST CHOOSE A GENERAL THEMATIQUE. I CHOOSE TO WORK ON SHARING AND CONVIVIALITY. I HAD THE FIRST IDEA TO MAKE A BAR TABLE.

WHAT MOST INSPIRES YOU?

AFTER A FEW RESEARCHES I READ A TEXT (I DON'T REMEMBER WHERE) AND DECIDED TO MAKE A WOOD STOVE. THIS TEXT WAS. "THE WOOD STOVE IS THE OLDEST TELEVISION SHOW OF THE WORLD, IT HAS THE POWER TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER AND CREATE A SERENE SMILE ON THE LIPS".
INDEED, WHAT CAN BE MORE FRIENDLY THAN FIRE.
FROM THERE I WANTED TO MAKE A LITTLE STOVE THAT COULD FIT IN A ROOM AND CREATE A COSY FIRE PLACE ATMOSPHERE, BUT INFACT WOULD NOT REPLACE THE HEATER. I MADE MY WOOD STOVE, INTERPRETING IT AS A SCULPTURE, A MONUMENT, BECAUSE IT'S GENERALLY AN IMPOSING OBJECT THAT ONCE PLACED WILL NOT BE REMOVED ANYMORE.
I LIKE THE SIMPLICITY, IT'S FORM AND THE FACT THAT IT INTEGRATE THE THREE STEPS OF FIRE: WOOD, FIRE AND ASHES.

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BEST AND WORST BITS OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?

THE BEST IS AN INCREDIBLE REPUTATION THAT I WON WITH THIS PROJECT:
WINNER OF THE INTERIOR 2010 IN KORTRIJK, BELGIUM WHERE I WON A STAND DURING 10 DAYS. THIS STAND PERMIT ME TO HAVE A FIRST CONTACT WITH CUSTOMERS AND PROFESSIONALS, DESIGNED BEST DOMESTIC DESIGN 2011 BY WALLPAPER AND A LOT OF PUBLICATION.
THE WORST IS THAT THIS IS STILL A PROTOTYPE AND I ALREADY HAVE LOTS OF ORDERS. IF I HAD MADE A CHAIR, IT WILL BE PERHAPS ALREADY IN DISTRIBUTION. BUT I MADE A WOOD STOVE AND THERE ARE A LOT OF STANDARDS ON IT. WITH WHAT LITTLE TIME WE HAVE FOR THE DIPLOMA I COULDN'T COMPLETE THE DEVELOPMENT.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

ACTUALLY I DEVELOP MY WOOD STOVE TO CONFORM WITH STANDARDS AND ENSURE IT HAS A BETTER PERFORMANCE.
BESIDES THAT I'M LOOKING FOR A JOB AND ALSO TO MAKE OTHER OBJECTS AND WHY NOT OPEN MY OWN STUDIO.

HOW DO YOU INCORPORATE THE VARIETY OF INFLUENCES IN YOUR WORK?

I KEEP INFORMED ON THE TRENDS OF DESIGN THROUGH MAGAZINES, AND THE INTERNET AND VARIOUS FAIRS. BUT I DON'T FOLLOW IT NECESSARILY. I LIKE DISCOVERING NEW TECHNIQUE, MAKE EXPERIMENT, TESTING, PLAYING.... AND MAKE SOMETHING A FORM, AN OBJECT DOESN'T EXIST. FOR MY WOOD STOVE I INTEGRATE TWO MATERIAL THAT I NEVER USE. ARMED CONCRETE AND CAST-IRON AND IT'S ALSO TWO ECOLOGICAL MATERIAL EASY TO RECYCLE.
THE WOOD STOVE IS A RETRO OBJECT WHICH HAVE NEVER REALLY BEEN REDESIGNED. I MADE IT WITH MORE CONTEMPORARY FORM AND I CHOSE CONCRETE TO BRING A MODERN MATERIAL TO A RATHER RETRO OBJECT. THIS WAY IT WOULD HARMONISE WITH THE ROUGH ASPECT OF CAST-IRON.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM BORN-LIVING?

I WAS BORN IN SAO PAULO, BRAZIL AND LIVED THERE 5 YEARS. I CAME TO SWITZERLAND IN 1990 AND LIVED 9 YEARS IN A SMALL VILLAGE NEXT TO LAUSANNE. AFTERWARDS I MOVED TO LA CHAUX-DE-FONDS, WHER I LIVE ACTUALLY. THIS CITY IS ALWAYS UNDER THE SNOW IN WINTER. BORN UNDER THE BRAZIL SUN TO FINISH UNDER THE SNOW.......

WHATS YOUR FAVOURITE THING RIGHT NOW?

START MY CAREER. OVERCOME THE BARRIERS AND FINALLY SELL MY STOVE.
